Gladiator

Movie Review “Gladiator”

Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama

Director: Ridley Scott

Writer: David Franzoni

Language: English

Star Cast: Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, and others

Released in India: 1 September 2000

‘Gladiator’ set in ancient time of Rome around 180 AD. It was time human fighting each other to kill was enjoyed as sport. It was time when dictator emperor ruled with brutality but nobody dares to oppose him. This movie is about one such guy Maximus (played by Russell Crowe) who dares to fight the emperor. Maximus was General in Caesar of Rome’s army who fought for them against Spain and won the war for them. The ruling Caesar was so happy with his patriotism that he wanted to make him next Ruler. Obviously Caesar’s son Commodus (played by Joaquin Phoenix) wasn’t happy with this decision. So he kills his father and Maximus’s family brutally. Maximus is totally broken and enslaved. He is bought by Proximo (played by Oliver Reed) as slave. Proximo then train him to fight as a gladiator.

Slowly, Maximus uses his warring skills to win the popularity of those who come to cheer for his death, until he gains an appearance in the Coliseum before Commodus who has made himself the new Caesar. Instead of having Maximus killed off right away, Commodus slowly lets him woo the crowd of Rome as well, until the final battle between them.

Ridley Scott did amazing job directing this extravagant movie. Art director and costume designer did outstanding job to portray ancient Rome. Russell Crowe was brilliant as usual.

If I have to rate this movie 10 out of 10.

Saving Private Ryan

Movie Review “Saving Private Ryan”

Genre: War, Action, Drama

Director: Steven Spielberg

Writer: Robert Rodat

Producer: Steven Spielberg, Ian Bryce, Mark Gordon, Gary Levinsohn

Language: English

Star Cast: Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore

Music: John Williams

Released: 1998

Saving Private Ryan is a war film set during the World War II which is directed by Steven Spielberg. I love war films and ‘Steven Spielberg’ is one of my favorite directors. So I had to watch this movie.

Movie starts with intense battle scenes. We see lot of blood and lots of dead bodies from the start. And among these we meet Captain John Miller (Played by Tom Hanks) who runs a successful mission of taking over a fort which was occupied by the Germans. After this he is given an even more difficult mission, which is to find a Private Ryan (played by Matt Damon). Private Ryan is the only surviving son in a family that has already lost three children in World War II. Returning the son alive to his family would mean a good public relations move for the Army, would make the son's mother happy. And after this mission Captain Miller, would finally be allowed to return home. Captain Miller and a team of seven soldiers set out to track the elusive Ryan who is lost somewhere in Normandy. So will they able to find Private Ryan? And will they able to save him and return home? That’s what movie is all about.

Movie has some rigorous, intensive and realistic war scenes. Steven Spielberg as a director did amazing job yet again. Cinematography and editing is excellent which is must for a film of this caliber. Tom hanks performance was exceptional. All in all I think this one is must watch movie. Don’t miss this. If I have to rate this movie, I will give it 9 out of 10.

JOGWA

Movie Review “Jogawa”

Genre: Drama

Director: Rajiv Patil

Producer: Shripal Morakhia

Presenter: IDream Productions Pvt. Ltd.

Language: Marathi

Star Cast: Upendra Limaye, Mukta Barve, Vinay Aapate, Amita Khopkar, Kishor Kadam, Sharvari and others

Music: Ajay – Atul

Although we all are moving towards globalization rapidly every day, thanks to various means of communications. There are still many villages in India which performs rituals come out of superstitions regularly. “Jogawa” is a movie which enlightens one such ritual or superstition which is still going on in villages. The movie is directed by Rajiv Patil who’s earlier films “Savarkhed Ek Gaon” and “Sanai Chaughade” appreciated by people. But this time he comes up with much more hard hitting story. It is a story of people who called as “Jogatin” and “Jogata” who m their family given up on the name of goddess to serve her. But the society treats them inhumanly and looks at them as mere sex objects.

The story happens in village where there is strong influence of Goddess ‘Yelamma’. And this influence is used by some people for their own cause on people who believe in these superstitions. Like the central characters of the movie Tayappa (played by Upendra Limaye) and Suli (played by Mukta Barve). When Suli’s mother found knots while combing her she was suggested she should be made ‘Jogatin’, and serve the goddess. Same with Tayappa when his father (played by Vinay Aapte) found out that Tayappa passing blood while urinating. He forced him to be a Jogata. Now he has to act like woman, ware cloths like woman and serve the goddess.

Both of them enjoyed the new environment for sometime but soon the society try to exploit them. They find solace in each other’s company and found love. And this is unthinkable and impermissible for any ‘Jogata’ and ‘Jogatin’. So the story is how they fight against the superstition and find their way.

The movie already won many National Awards. We can see some brilliant performance in the movie. Upendra Limaye, Mukta Barve were brilliant so was all the actors. Rajiv Patil comes up with his best work yet. Technically the movie is 10 0n 10. Good cinematography and good music by Ajay – Atul which enhance the movie experience and made it more believable.

If I have to rate this movie I will give it 9 out of 10.

"PAA"

Movie Review “Paa”

Genre: Drama

Director: R. Balki

Producer: A. B. Corp.

Language: Hindi

Star Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Arundhati Naag, Paresh Rawal and others.

Music: Illaiyraja

“Paa” is a story of Auro played by Amitabh Bachchan. He is a 12 year progeria infected kid. These kids body grows 7 time older than their actual age. That means they do not live beyond 13-14 years. Auro is living with his mother Vidya played by Vidya Balan who is gynecologist and his grandmother played by Arundhati Naag. Auro calls her bum. Now Auro is very popular at school and fun loving kid. Once he wins an award in his school which was presented to him from a young politician, Amol Arte played by Abhishek Bachchan. Now Amol Arte happens to be Auro’s father; but both of them unaware of it. During vidya’s studding days abroad, she was in a relationship with Amol Arte. But when she got pregnant Amol suggest abortion as he did not want to spoil his political ambition. But Vidya decides to keep the child and dump Amol. Over the years Vidya kept a secret from Auro about who his father is. But when Auro reaches final stages of his life she reveals to him that Amol Arte is his father. And then rest of the movie is all about how Auro get his parents back together.

Paa is a heart touching movie. It is a family entertainment and kids going to love it. There is some excellent cinematic work involved in this film. First and foremost what should be mentioned are make-up artists who transformed Amitabh Bachchan into Auro. Then Amitabh Bachchan again comes up with amazing acting performance. Then the kid who played Auro’s best friend Vishnu was simply brilliant. All the scenes involving him are highly entertaining. Way to go for this kid. Vidya Balan, Abhishek Bachchan and Arundhati Naag gave justice to their respective roles. But I felt Paresh Rawal was wasted.

If I have to rate this movie I will give it 8 out of 10. And it is a Must Watch Movies for all Amitabh Bachchan’s Fans.
